There Was a Crooked Man

There was a crooked man,
And he walked a crooked mile,
He found a crooked sixpence
Against a crooked stile.

He bought a crooked cat,
Which caught a crooked mouse,
And they all lived together
In a little crooked house.

Every fourth week, one day each month, I can be found in a procedure room at Dr. Reeder’s place of practice.  Dr. Reeder is my Chiropractor.  I first met Reeder when I was 21 years of age (just a kid really) and I had insufferable pain in my lower back and all down through my left leg.

"I'm not always so much so 'on the ball', not always!"

I had insufferable pain, so much so that I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t sit upright (which made the ride to his office quite painful I might add).  I was anti-social, I couldn’t smile, I could barely carry my own weight and I certainly had no desire to “carry a tune”.  I was so miserable at one point I remember distinctly raising my fist to the ceiling and crying out “Why are You doing this to me!?!”  I’m not positive but I may have uttered an expletive or two toward my Creator and Savior.  I was that crooked man.

Apparently I missed the part in the Bible where it says, “In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

I had only been a Christian for two years by this time and by every external standard I was “a Christian above all Christians.”  I say by every external standard, which is to say as things appeared to others, but God looks at the heart and it’s the inner life and response to circumstances that gives evidence to the Life of Christ abiding within.  However, after this glaring chink in my “Spiritual Armor” I began to see other areas in my life that were not as “in check” as I thought they were also, such sins were prevalent in my private life and thoughts that I feel ashamed now to even mention them.

God revealed some of them to us in a nice 'neat' list in Galatians 5:19, “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,” Suffice to say, road rage, which I experienced often seemed to be the least of my problems. My thought life was not what it should have been.  It got to a point where I began to even doubt if I was really “born again” in the first place.  It was a very dark and confusing time for me. I remember praying as Isaiah did, "Woe is me, for I am undone," but instead of a man of unclean lips I said, "for I am a man of unclean thoughts, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean thoughts."  I am so glad that God cleaned up my thought life.

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

But Let’s get back to my back for a moment.  So, what was going on and why did I have so much discomfort?  It should be obvious I think, things were out of alignment, they were not the way they were intended to be.  Actually, as a later X-ray would reveal, I had a herniated disk at my fifth lumbar and the bulge was pushing against my sciatic nerve.

A cortisone shot mixed with Novocain relieved it for a time but when the drug wore off the pain returned.  Physical therapy and exercise only worsened the agony.  Pain “killers” were dealing with the symptoms but no one had yet got to the root of my injury.

When things are out of place there is pain involved, just ask anyone who has had a broken bone or a dislocated joint if you’ve never had the pleasure of that kind of experience.

Now spiritually speaking, things were 'out of place' for me also.  I was following a list of 'do's and don'ts', standards that would ensure that I would be spiritual.  I was not very spiritually minded as is plainly obvious.  I did not love God with all my heart, I loved my own comfort.  I did not obey the heart of things, I was only trying to obey the external motion of things.

If we desire God's best.  If we want Him to increase in our lives.  We must love Him above even our own comfort.  We must love Him with all our hearts.  We need to get a doctorate in theology: I don't mean a college education but I do mean we need to pay attention to doctrine.  We need to know what we believe about our God and why.  Never mind the lists... that'll all fall into place as you learn of Him.  We also need to become a reader... Not Dr. Reeder... we need to read the Word of God.  Read it often, humbly, and with a desire to obey whatever God clearly asks of you.  I say clearly asks because you can't make the Bible say things it doesn't.  "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"

Do this and He will increase in your life, His presence IN you will be obvious to those around you, They will 'see' less of you and more of God in you.

"He must increase, WE must decrease!"

Arise and Go! (Faith Defies Reason)

Many who know me know that I have been wrestling with questions surrounding a possible call on my life to preach and teach the Word of God.  As I look at my journal entries from years past it becomes obvious that I have been wrestling with this for many more years than I even realized.  Back in 2006 the LORD gave me some clear direction regarding some of this and I marked and dated my Bible as a sign-post to remind me whenever I happened across those verses.  Back then God was confirming in my heart that He wanted me to “stay the course”; to continue to teach and disciple folks in our local church.  It was always the conviction and leading of God for both my wife and I that God was calling us to stay; but not to go.  Just stay. Remain faithful. Teach and serve in whatever capacities He would lead.  I could share the specific verses and what was going on in my heart then but this post will be too long for the average reader as it is.  That will have to wait until another post.
Many of our friends in our church had expressed to me that they see in me the makings of a Man of God; a preacher.  One dear older saint who has been somewhat of a grandmother figure to me said, “It is wonderful to watch you grow and progress in your ministries.”  This said after I had finished preaching one evening while our pastor was away.  It is a wonderfully supernatural thing to preach and sense that God is steering you.  It’s different than simply public speaking; probably the closest thing I can relate it to, to those who have never preached, is the same sense that one has that God is steering your thoughts and conversation when you witness for Him.  Now if you have never witnessed in the Spirit this does not help either.  The ‘feeling’ is very similar but not exactly the same.
In a book I borrowed from my pastor’s study by Pastor Roy L. Branson Jr. entitled, “Dear Preacher, Please Quit!” (The title is deceiving because it’s designed to affirm preachers and help pulpit committees in the selection process.)  I am so thankful for my pastor allowing me access to his library.  I told him on several occasions that he can have his cars but that I really have a hard time not coveting his books.  In this particular book, “Dear Preacher, Please Quit!” It lays out six marks of the man called of God.  As I read through those six marks it became increasingly more obvious to me that all of them fit me.  I really didn’t know what to think.  I consulted a pastor friend of mine, and another deacon friend, and both of them told me I should let my preacher know.  He would know what to do next and how to follow through in obedience to my call if indeed it was a call.  I knew I had to let my pastor know.
While at work one day; I don’t remember the day.  I remember that I skipped my lunch so that I could call him and talk to him about it.  His counsel was very helpful.  He shared details about his own call with me and then prayed with me for me.  He told me to pay close attention to the Spirit in my heart and mind while I did my daily devotions and spent time in the Word.  He told me that if I am called that God would confirm it and show me what to do next.
So I set out to seek intently the mind of God in this matter.  In the past when I would set my mind on thinking about or pursuing “the call” it seemed that heaven was silent on the subject.  When I would determine to just simply get to know God better and love Him more it was then the tug-of-war would ensue.  I think this time of seeking was different because it seemed that God had initiated it and I was instructed by the preacher how to pursue this.  My actions were an act of response and obedience rather than a self-involved pursuit.
On September 10th this fall, 2011 of course, after having fasted and earnestly wrestling over this I finally got something of an answer.  This was the third morning of my intentional three-day fast and at 4 o’clock in the morning as is my practice I got up an hour before leaving for work to have coffee and get into my Bible. Since I was already “wrestling with God” I determined to read the account of Jacobs wrestling with God in Genesis 32.  I read where The Angel of the Lord said “Let me go, for the day breaketh.” And Jacob responded with “I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.”  I prayed, “I will not let thee go, except Thou bless me. I don’t want to be uncertain about this any longer.”  As I flipped through the pages of Genesis I noticed in my Thompson Chain-Reference Bible in the notes the heading labeled “Jacob’s Ladder” and it occurred to me that I hadn’t really taken a lot of time over the years to really study that, so I began to read it.
I read in Genesis 28 starting in verse one; “And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.” Then in verse two I was startled and stopped after the first two words, “Arise, go”.  This was an account of Isaac sending Israel away to get a wife.  It was not intended for me.  But the words stuck fast in my heart and just sat there.  I couldn’t shake them.  I thought, “Perhaps God would tell us to go somewhere, to do something specific.”  That would be inconceivable really though because we both were very active in multiple leadership roles.  Recently my wife and I had been talking and praying about God using us in greater capacities in other places.  Isaac said to Jacob, “And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;” I thought, “Oh God, that would be wonderful to hear you affirm something like that to me.”
I finished reading the story of Jacob’s dream and I had more time.  So I decided on another search criteria.  I remembered somewhere a king, or a prophet, or someone else of importance in men’s eyes died and the whole nation fasted, and prayed, and grieved for three days. I thought perhaps that would be as good a place to look as any other.  I opened my concordance to search “a three day fast” and the search reminded me that Paul upon the occasion of his conversion fasted for three days.  “That’s right! Paul?”  And my study intentions were diverted into the ninth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles.  (If you are a student of the word reading this then you know where this is going next.)
I read through the account of Saul’s salvation and call.  The words jumped out at me. “Lord, what will You have me to do?”  The answer? “Arise and go” My mind raced; this is now the second time that morning, the third morning of my wrestling with God over a possible call; it was the second time I read “Arise, Go.  The Spirit of God anchored those words into my mind so that when I read on and was reminded of Ananias being sent to meet Saul of Tarsus with the words, “Arise and Go.” I was dumbfounded.  I have always told God that if He was going to call me He would have to make it clear because I am a little slow on the uptake.  I still wasn’t convinced.  Have I somehow subconsciously turned to these texts on purpose?  I wasn’t sure.
I ran out of time to read and had to get my work clothes on, let the dog out, and gather my things for work.  Downing the last few sips of coffee as I waited by the door for my ride I prayed, and thought, and prayed some more.
When we arrived at work I stayed in the car.  I often do that so I can read some more before going into the plant.  I reread the texts that my search led me to just an hour earlier.  I meditated on what I had just experienced and wondered what it might mean or if it meant anything at all.  After all the “Arise and go” commands in Acts 9 were specific to Paul and Ananias and were not intended for me.  Nowhere did I read my name in the text.
Before too long it was time to go in so I slowly closed my Bible and climbed out of the car and walked with God into the dark, loud, busy place where bottles of water are born better.  I was claiming the verse, as often I did, that if I “commit my works unto the Lord my thoughts would be established.”
I continued through my fast to work and pray and seek Gods mind in all of this.  My mind was sensitive to the Spirit and I worshipped adoringly as I worked.  When it came time to write the days date on my paperwork the date 9-10-11 jumped out at me and it seemed in my spirit that the Spirit of God was telling me something.  I thought perhaps if I went back and read Acts nine again, continuing through chapters ten and eleven, that perhaps I would understand some things a little more clearly.  So I determined that when I went to break I would do that.
When I opened my Bible at break the thought occurred to me to check Acts 9 verses 10 and 11 and as I began to read I couldn’t believe my eyes.  It was the 3rdArise and Go” that I had just read earlier that morning.  This is now the 4th time that morning I sensed the Spirit instructing me with the same words.  I was convinced that God was telling me to do just that “Arise and Go” but go where? And when? Everything seemed still so unclear.  The scriptures say that when God says something three times it means that it is settled in heaven; it cannot be changed. (I can’t find the reference for this – maybe one of you can help me?)
In the month that followed I wrestled intently with this.  When I was alone with God I was convinced of the direction my family had to take and when I got around other believers and shared some of this with them I became unsure again.  Sundays and Wednesdays became times of set back and doubt in this as the feedback I was getting from others seemed to contradict what I sensed the Spirit was doing in my heart and life.  I was sharing my every decision with my wife who was faithfully trying to follow my lead. But because of my vacillating on this I left her often confused, frustrated, and twisting in the wind.
Finally the Spirit of God said to me as described in my story entitled “A Leg Out.” Read it if you wish. He said, “Carl, you need to make up your mind.  There is too much at stake to keep bouncing back and forth.”  By this time I had written two letters to surrender my ministries and membership at church.  Neither of which actually made it to the pastor's desk.  I was convinced God wanted me to do this but I was unsure of the details.  It didn’t make sense.  Faith defies reason. More often than not when God called a Man of God in scripture He asked them to go and didn’t give them a whole lot of instruction as to the details.  My only explanation for this is that if the man is going to teach others to walk by faith he is going to have had to walk completely and only by faith.  He will have to get out of his comfort zone. God told me that others would not understand.  He said that they would disagree with ‘my’ decision.  I wrestled with trying to find some plausible explanation that I could share with the church.  Much of these ‘plausible explanations’ were the contents of my letters of resignation.  Even my final letter of resignation didn’t spell this out, what I wrote in the letter, a private matter not to be shared here or anywhere, was I believe mostly somewhat the truth but it was not this.  What you read here is the reason for our resignation.  We don’t fully understand it.  I don’t know where I will be three months from now but I know God will direct my steps.  He has shown us so much and made some things so very clear to us since the day I finally determined to obey and to make this move.  My only regret is that I failed to communicate this part of my ‘call’ with my pastor.  Had I done that, no doubt he could have helped me with it.
Right or wrong I couldn’t ignore the persistent voice telling me it was time.  If I am wrong about this I will bear the consequences alone.  I don’t believe I am wrong.  We didn’t want to leave our church family.  I wept deeply the morning of “A Leg Out” while driving alone in the car listening to Steve Green’s song “I Will Go.”  I wept very deeply.  And wrestled with God even more; God won of course.
Remember God told Jonah to arise and go also. Twice even. It almost didn’t go very well for those his shipmates.  They lost everything overboard.  They were about to lose their lives.  I cannot take a chance on disobedience and what it may mean for my church.
God showed me other things that September 10th morning.  Things regarding what the future of our church held.  Good things. Similar to what God told the pastor that “The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.” (Micah 2:9)  Also things regarding the possibility of us some day returning.
Time would not permit me here to share everything God showed me.  But I want to end this post with a word of caution to those seeking a call.  Remember that Peter did not step out of the boat except at Jesus’ bidding.  Peter said “Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.”  Then, and only then did Jesus reply, “Come.”  If you are determined to step out of the boat.  You who are struggling with a call.  You had better make sure it’s Jesus out there on the water and not a figment of your imagination.  Don’t go just to get away from conflict if conflict exists.  It may be the conflict God has designed to mature you and grow you up.  He often does.  And if you are sure it is Him.  Keep your eyes on Jesus and not on the angry waves.
“He must increase, WE must decrease!”
I am still not fully persuaded I am ‘called’.  As I said, “I’m a little slow on the uptake.” And I definitely don’t want to be presumptuous. But I am positive God is leading me.  To what end, I know not, We shall soon see.

Zombies Beware!

Early on in my Christian walk I used to have a bizarre recurring dream.  A kind of Night Mare on Hard Scrabble Street.  This dream must have taken place before I was thirteen when I quit church for a job.  Or perhaps it was when in my late teens when God brought me back to Himself.  Now I’m not so sure.  In the dream I know I was young.
I was at my aunt’s house where I often spent time as a pre-teen.  While there alone, in the front yard, approaching the house, I would find myself being followed and surrounded by Zombie like figures, they would be coming from every direction.  Slowly approaching from every quarter; Arms out, slow monotonous steps, eyes sunken in, I almost think there was a continuous drone or hum that came from their throats.  I was always scared when I dreamed this.  Beyond scared.
As a new Christian I was told of the power that we have “In Jesus Name”.  So in my dream I began to rebuke the foul creatures “In Jesus Name”.  I would say “In Jesus Name” go away!!! “In Jesus Name” leave me alone!!! Nothing happened they kept coming. “I command you “In Jesus Name””…  Still nothing.  Closer.  Closer.  Closer.  Finally as they were breathing down my neck I would pray and cry out in exasperation, “Dear Jesus please help me!”
When I prayed and asked for help, instead of trying to exercise some power in my own strength, then things happened.  All of the Zombies, in cartoon like fashion, would run screaming.  There would be a blur in their wake as they went.  I almost think I heard the rushing wind of their retreat in my dream.  Then I would wake up; Troubled, relieved, sometimes dazed.  The dream happened a lot.  So much so that I thought it was some kind of message from God.
So what did all this mean?  What was my battle against these devilish creatures supposed to signify?  Nothing.  It was a dream.  But I think it reveals a little bit about what was going on in my mind as a new troubled young teen.  I think I had just read a so-called “Christian” comedians fraudulent account about his leaving his role as a satanic high priest and all the bizarre things that supposedly happened to him.  Like a boys chest collapsing as he accidentally fell into the center of a pentagram while his coven was encircling it and chanting.  And like how once when praying, he supposedly was pinned to the floor by invisible devils and it felt to him as though they were gnawing at his wrists and ankles.  He then supposedly cried out in exasperation, “Dear Jesus please help me!” and was relieved of his assault.
Now don’t get me wrong.
I believe we are battling a very dangerous, unseen, malicious, hateful enemy.
The devils do not care who they hurt; all they care about is hurting someone.

They can't get at God's 'throat' so to hurt Him they want to hurt the objects of His love.

In the book of Job, Satan was going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

Peter says “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” He only intends to do harm.

I call in question the unmentioned comedians account simply because it was reported that his book and testimony, his entire comedic set was built on a lie.
I also believe that “the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.”
Keep your heart perfect towards Him.  This verse, if you read it in 2 Chronicles 16:9, was a reproof to one who had done foolishly.  Nevertheless “the eyes of the LORD DO run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.”
Keep your heart perfect toward Him.  Obey His lead.  Be not afraid.
“He must increase, WE must decrease!”
I haven’t had this dream in a very long time;
God straightened out my doctrine
and
is removing daily false assumptions and superstitions.
We will prevail.  Zombies beware!

That Good Part

Some days when I attempt to write I can’t.  I have nothing in the forefront of my mind to share.  Perhaps it’s on these days that I need to go drink from the fountains of living water again, and bask in the radiance of Jesus’ transcendent smile.  I need to choose that good part, that will not be taken away from me.

"But Martha was cumbered about much serving,
and came to him (Jesus),
and said, Lord,
dost thou not care
that my sister hath left me
to serve alone?

bid her therefore that she help me.

And Jesus answered and said unto her,
Martha, Martha,
thou art careful and troubled about many things:

But one thing is needful:
and Mary hath chosen that good part,
which shall not be taken away from her."

That good part. What is it?

"And she had a sister called Mary,
which also sat at Jesus' feet,
and heard his word."

(Luke 10:38-42)

The message we believers have to share is not our own as though it were all about us.  Perhaps it’s on days like these, that we need to be reminded that all God really wants is our adoration; for us to meditate on His promises, to rejoice in gratitude for His unspeakable gift of salvation bought by the death of the Only Begotten.

In reality, that’s all He ever wanted from His creation in the first place; our praise and adoration.  He showers us with blessings because He loves us. Isn’t it only right that He gets all of our attentiveness.  And as we look to our resurrected Lord. He then turns our gaze on others; to seek their good and salvation.

I’m going to go read my Bible;

I need something fresh from Heaven.

“He must increase,
      WE must decrease!”

My Dear Son

My Dear Son,

I have no greater wisdom to leave you than that which is written in this Holy Book.  Although you may never have had the chance to know me, know this…
Your father loves you and loves your mom and loves the LORD.  Study these pages to know the LORD and you shall know my heart for it has been my supreme desire to be like Him.  Know Him and you shall know Eternal Life, obey Him and you shall know peace and contentment; anticipate His coming and you shall know joy (I will meet you in the clouds – 1 Thess. 4:17); Follow Him and you will be a leader- leading others to saving intimate knowledge of Jesus Christ.  Do this and your reward in heaven shall be great- you will shine as bright as the stars in heaven with the reflection of God’s glory.
                                                                                    See you there,
                                                                                    Love, Dad

I don’t remember what prompted me to write this note to my son in the front page of my Bible some twelve years ago.  He was our only child at the time.  I probably had some aches and pains associated with an eating disorder that I had when I was a teenager; actually I think it was a nervous disorder that affected my eating but let’s not get technical.  Thank God that the “peace of God that passes all understanding” delivered me from that anxious mess.
My father’s father died at the very young age of twenty-seven; my dad was just a toddling around himself when it happened.  My grandfather was clubbed on the head in a bar brawl that caused the clot that killed him.  That’s another story altogether but I think that hearing about his untimely and unnecessary death made such an impression on me that it turned me into a hypochondriac.  To this day I can’t have unexplainable aches and pains without thinking that perhaps my time has come.
Now it’s not that I don’t trust in the goodness of God; I do.  But I’m a realist and I recognize the sovereignty of God also.  It is my understanding that He, as God, can do with us, His creation, as He sees fit.  If that includes transporting me to an existence in a realm where pain, and sorrow, and separation shall be no more, than it is His prerogative to do so.  It’s His alone.
As I said, I don’t remember what prompted me to write the note.  I think that I thought I was dying.  I used to foolishly pray things like “Let me just finish this project Lord, then You can….” Or “Let this and this happen first Lord, then You can take me….”  As though He needed my permission.  How silly of me to pray thus when I could have earlier learned the joy of casting all my cares on Him and praying for others.
Later after our 1st daughter was born I had to change the heading to address both of the kids.  Now, as I pulled my old worn Bible out of the dust (I have a new one now), as I pulled it out to copy what I wrote there to this Blog I realized that I now have to change it again to address all my dear children.  I enjoy each day that I have with them and don’t take a single one for granted.  I don’t take them for granted and I don’t take the days for granted.  I strive to be the type of dad who lives each day I have with them to the fullest.  Some days I do better at this than others, some days are woefully wasted but I strive for their sakes to do better.  As far as I know I am perfectly healthy and while I don’t really know how many days I have remaining, none of us do, I am thankful for today.
In all the things that I wrote to my children, I think I wanted to convey the very simple principle that “He must increase and WE must decrease.” By seeing to this, there is joy unspeakable and full of glory and there is peace that passes all understanding.

WWJD

Early on as a young adult Christian I found myself in a very awkward situation.  A situation in which I had to definitely ask myself, “What would Jesus do?” and yet, I now realize, twenty years later, that Jesus would not have done anything in that exact moment.  I had created the problem, the dilemma, the awkwardness; or at least I had intensified an already awkward situation.  I had done it acting rashly and not following some, yet unknown to me, biblical injunctions.  No doubt the ramifications of my actions have had a profound impact on those involved; but perhaps not the impact I wanted to have.
While I was trying to find myself; trying to carve out my niche in the world. I was trying to see if maybe God would want me to follow in my older brother’s footsteps, footsteps that seemed to be following in our fathers.  I was working as a pipe-fitter apprentice, working with a man named Phil, learning the secrets of bending tubing to match blueprint specs so we could put one giant paper machine puzzle together in Warren, Maine.  My father and my brother were putting larger parts of the puzzle together, huge pieces of pipe that needed to be welded together.  They were working on the same machine, just in another part of the huge ark-like building housing the contraption.  And Doug, who was my step-brother growing up, may as well say he was my brother too, was working on the same machine in yet another field of study.  I can’t really remember if it was electrical, carpentry, plumbing, or what he was studying but you get the idea.  We were all together in one huge building in Warren, Maine building one colossal paper making device.
Warren, if I remember correctly, and I’m not going to “Google” it because it really is not an important fact of the story; if I remember correctly it is about an hour plus a few minutes’ drive north of L\A (Lewiston-Auburn) here in Maine.  To save on gas, and to allow for some more shut-eye during the drive, we would car pool each taking turns daily to drive.  When it was your turn to drive you would use your own vehicle and gas while the others sipped coffee, napped, or whatever.  Most days this was no problem because when it was someone else’s vehicle I was just along for the ride and it didn’t really matter to me who did what.  But when it was my turf it made a great deal of difference to me.  Perhaps it shouldn’t have but then it made a great deal of difference.  On the way home we would make the customary stop at a convenience store; so the guys could get “smokes”, a beer, a snack, or whatever the long days work had them hankerin’ for.
I usually stayed in the car.  I didn’t smoke anymore. I didn’t drink anymore. And besides I was a minor and shouldn’t anyway. And rarely was I hungry when I got out of work.  All I wanted to do was to get home and get cleaned up.  To get some of the filth of that construction site cleaned off of me.  I didn’t mind waiting.  I didn’t even mind putting up with my families’ habits on the way home; after all it wasn’t long ago before that I shared in all the same habits myself but now I was different.  I had been changed from the inside out by the King of Kings, The Lord Jesus.  He was changing me into a newer, cleaner, and healthier person.  Though a new person there were some things I hadn’t learned.  Like tact, patience, tolerance, and listening to His voice guide in difficult situations.
I didn’t mind waiting but I didn’t want to stop when it was my turn to drive the bus.  I didn’t want to stop because even though most days  I didn’t mind putting up with my families’ habits, when it was my turn to drive, when it was my turf, it made a great deal of difference to me what went on in the boundaries of my life, my property, my car.
On a certain day, probably a Monday, probably after getting fired up on Sunday to take a stand for Jesus, it was my turn to drive.  The way to work was usually uneventful because most of the guys slept through the drive.  The way home was a different story and this particular day for some reason I was determined not to be pressed into a mold of other peoples making.
We stopped at the convenience store at someone’s request; insistence probably, I don’t remember that.  I just remember we stopped.  After everyone climbed into the car again we set on our way.  I was playing some “Oak Ridge Boys” (I think) on the cassette player.  It was a country-western style gospel music that I thought they might tolerate since they all liked, or “didn’t mind”, country. And we drove.
After a short distance someone, I think it was my father, cracked a beer can open and opened up a flood of turmoil in my heart and mind. ‘I am a minor, doesn’t he care I could get in trouble with the law!’ I thought, and ‘this is my car, I don’t want alcohol in my car anymore! You think he would realize that!’ I mused and fumed inside quietly.
After another short distance, my brother, the step-brother, asked if he could smoke in the car.  I replied with, “It’s a fairly new car and since I quit smoking I don’t want the smell of smoke on her.”  Which would have been sufficient except that my dad spoke up and said, “Just blow it out the window, it’ll be okay.”  I wish I could just blow my stream of thought out the window as easily.  I mused and fumed some more. Quietly. On the inside.
Then yet another short distance, my other brother, the other son of my mother, asked if they could listen to the radio instead of what I was playing.  I denied the request; which would have been fine except that my father chimed in again.  I conceded and changed to a country station under the stipulation that if it played anything I considered offensive that the cassette would go back in or that we would listen to silence.  It didn’t take long.  If you know country, you know what I mean. (No offence Trace Atkins; keep up the good work brother.) Most country is not very edifying, kind of blues like with a twang.  I don’t remember what came on the radio but it was something about somebody cheating on their spouse and enjoying it.  I didn’t miss a beat, I shut it off or changed it, I don’t remember which, it was twenty years ago.  I do remember what happened next like it was yesterday though.
My father happened.  He’s a believer today and still struggles with some issues but back then he was clearly my adversary.  After some verbal skirmishing with my brothers, my dad steps in and says “Look Carl let us listen to the radio or you can let us all out! We’ll walk home!” Now my dad of all people should have known that we Dills rise to a challenge.  Normally docile and quiet but we always rise to the occasion when put on the spot.  My mind reeled with what to do, what to say, how to handle it in the most “Christian-like” manner.
I said, “I’m not going to listen to that stuff on my radio.” And “I’ll let you out to walk if that’s what you want, (I’m pretty sure what they wanted was for me to stand down) but so we're clear…” I had to make sure they didn’t hang me and my faith with this (which they probably did anyway but that’s okay.) “so we’re clear…  if you walk… you chose to get out and walk.  Don’t go around saying I threw you out of my car and made you walk home.”  They agreed.  I think he thought if they pushed the envelope that I would stand down.
So here we were.  Half way between toll gates on the interstate highway, I had just opened the trunk to let them get their lunch containers, and now I sat staring at them incredulously out my windshield as they walked slowly ahead of and away from my stopped car.  To make it more interesting the Lord had provided a little rain adding to the unfolding drama.  I prayed out loud, “LORD, Please help me to know what to do!!! I don’t know what to do!”
Now as I think back, there are many principles I could have applied to prevent this very awkward situation in the first place.  A situation that I am sure Jesus never would have found Himself in, but I’m not Jesus (In case any of you who know me think that I think I am… I’m not the Boss.). I could have made sure that I was not unequally yoked together in this agreement to car pool.  I could have simply permitted myself to be defrauded, made it clear that I didn’t like it, and made different arrangements for the future.  I could have continued driving and tried to talk them down from their high-horses that were standing nearly as high as mine was.  I could have, I could have, I could have, but I didn’t.  Here I was, staring out my windshield wondering, praying, God what do I do now.
Do I drive out and past them and home-ward?  Maybe even honk lightly as I drove past.  Would it be wrong to smile and wave as I went by them?  Do I stand down? Say, “Hey, I was just kidding, my personal convictions don’t mean that much to me, its okay, come back.”  What to do? What to say?  Then an answer came (Thank you Holy Spirit!), it occurred to me what Jesus would do, in fact, it occurred to me what Jesus did several thousand years ago.
I climbed out of the car, got their attention, since they were walking away and their backs were towards me.  When they turned around, I threw my keys at my father (I was still a little flustered; Jesus would have handed him the keys.), I threw the keys at them and said, “You take the car, I’ll walk.”  You see…  Jesus, who had every right to go-it-home alone didn’t.  He walked that long road to Calvary and laid down His life for us.  He Who knew no sin, became sin for us, so that we could become the righteousness of God in Him.  He suffered, and bled, and died, and later revived (came back to life.), so that we could someday journey with Him to a home He is preparing for us in glory.  God always has a way; He always has a plan.
As it turned out, there had been a prison break that day and the state police were out in force looking for the escape artists.  I hadn’t walked very many steps when something caught my attention.  I don’t remember if it was a blurb of the siren or what, but something from behind my car called me back.  By this time my family was all safely buckled into their seats and I’m pretty sure they were fixin’ to drive away.
I stood there in the rain talking to the Trooper, explaining the situation as he patiently listened.  I wonder now what he must have been thinking about all of this.  I may never know.  After I explained he walked over to the car and questioned my passengers and verified that they were who they said they were.  Then he leaned into the window and said something like, “This is a state highway, pedestrians are not permitted, if you have a problem keep quiet about it, and handle it like men when you get home.”  I smiled, got back into the car, and we drove away.
You would think that would have settled it.  Would have demonstrated amply Who the Boss of things was but before long someone murmured about the silence again.  I repeated “if you have a problem keep quiet about it, handle it like men…” Then it was settled.  At least it seemed so.  I couldn’t say what anyone was thinking but the silence was golden.
I love my family.  I want God’s best for them.  It has taken me twenty years to open lines of communication with some of them; lines that are still a little scratchy today but probably only because we look at the worlds through different sets of glasses.  I can only pray that what I did that day, what I didn’t do, and how God turned it around will somehow all work together for their good.  As I said, my father is a believer in the incarnate, crucified, resurrected, Son of God today.  And although he still struggles with several things I do see growth and change in him.  I know that God takes our mistakes and our selfless actions too, and paints a beautiful picture, a portrait of Himself in us.  The more people see the likeness of God’s Son in us the more He increases in the eyes of others and the more we decrease in comparison.
“He must increase, and WE must decrease!”

Another Legalistic Mental-Block Crumbles

Early one morning, as in most mornings, I purposely awoke early enough to prepare mentally to prepare for the day, I wrestled with a choice.  I had just thirty-five minutes or so to "kill" before I had to actually start getting ready to head out the door for work.

The first five minutes or so of that time was wasted "wrestling" in my mind with a choice between prayer, reading my Bible, reading one of several books I have started reading, or working on the novel that I have begun to write.

Normally, I would go through this process of "wrestling" then have a compulsory bent toward my Bible and start each day there.  It was not something I did out of my genuine "hunger and thirst" for God but rather it was usually something I did because I felt it was "required" of God.  If I would read a verse or two, possibly not even giving it all that much thought, then I could conscience doing the other things I wanted to or that I felt God wanted me to do.

It occurred to me that the very act of wrestling with the decision had become a form of prayer.  I was weighing my options, considering the time (or in this case the lack of time), and "talking" with the LORD about what He would like me to do.  The verse that says, "therefore whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do ALL to the Glory of God" kept coming to mind.  It also occurred to me that the novel I was writing was something I believed strongly that He wanted me to write.

So that morning I chose to work on the novel.  Since I have started the novel "project", I have had wonderful times with the LORD brooding over the pages, meditating on scripture, and thinking about how He would have me communicate what was on my mind, changing, editing, and adding text.

The liberty that God had given me to choose what I wanted to do had turned into a beautiful time of worship, praise, and creativity.  At times tears of joy almost whelmed up within me.

Now, I more strongly than ever do not want to do anything out of a "have to" mentality,  I now have the confidence that I as a believer have the liberty to do whatever I want to do as long as I do it "as unto the Lord" and am comfortable "knowing He is aware of the decision". (See the Post entitled - Garden Variety Choices) -- Although I have known that "where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty" I have not always "felt" that I had this kind of freedom.

As it turned out, mostly everything I did that particular day, did not seem like a chore, rather it all became a powerful time to commune with the LORD; to love Him with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength.  This is abundant living, as He is exalted in my thinking; I am "mounting up on wings as an eagle".  This is how I want to live every moment...

"He must increase, WE must decrease!"...

And by the way, I did have time later that morning for time in the Word; it too was a wonderful time of fellowship with my God.

Slow on the Uptake

My last name DILL means Descendant of Dill or Dila (The Dull One), another definition is Son of Dullard. (According to the New Dictionary of American Family Names.)

As I mentioned in other Blog entries,
 I am a production worker,
and on the days that I work,
if everything runs well,
I basically have twelve hours to kill.
I do periodic tests,
add a few raw materials to my line,
and think ….

(I pray, plan, meditate on His promises ~ IF YOU HAVE A PRESSING PRAYER NEED ~ AN URGENT MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH ~ A SOUL ON THE ‘EDGE’ OF RECEIVING OR LEAVING MATTER ~ inbox my Facebook message box with a brief prayer request and know that I will be praying about it for you.)

Sometimes, during my time at work, I like to plug words into Microsoft Excel Thesuarus to get a few new synonyms for my 'collection'.

I tried: Dullard and Dolt and got nothing for results.

Then I tried Dull: there we go! stupid, thick, unintelligent, dense, slow, dim-witted, obtuse...

and then I Had to Laugh, also listed was... "slow on the uptake"...

That's it.  If someone asks what my name means I will tell them it means Son of Dila (the dull one).
It means,...
um,...
I'm,...
well,...
slow on the uptake, that explains a lot!

Funny Huh?
(Unless you're a Dill
and you lost your sense of humor
behind your sense of pride.)

I also tried: "follower" and got admirer,
adherent, disciple, devotee,
fan, and get this...

a "hanger-on".

If you are a disciple of, a believer in, a follower of, Jesus Christ and you are going through something that seems impossible to get through... "hang-on". Jesus said He would never, never leave you and never, never forsake you.

After twenty-two years of living in the light of His promises I can honestly say He has never let me down. Though I have "let Him down" too many times to count.  And though you may "let Him down" from time to time, He will not let you down.

In all reality He knows our "up rising and our down sitting, and He knows our thoughts afar off." (from Psalm 139) Because He knows before hand our actions and thoughts, and because He knows the stuff we're made of, it is impossible really for us, those who trust in Him, to "let Him down", rather it is He who waits to "hold us up" and to show Himself strong on our behalf.

Hang on, don't give up, don't quit... He will not let you down.

Call out to Him. If sin is keeping you from Him, agree with Him that it is sin and call out to Him.  He is faithful and just to forgive it and to clean you up again.  Humble yourself, put Him first...

If there is no sin and your conscience is clear... keep hanging on, He will not allow you to be tested in a greater way than you are prepared to handle.  Continue to praise Him even when it is most difficult to do so...

"He must increase, WE must decrease!"
